From August 11–14, 2020, CYWater successfully held its 8th Summer Meeting online, its format adapted to the pandemic. The meeting was hosted by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (CAS) and Michigan State University, with co-organizing support from Tsinghua University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Fudan University, Capital Normal University, Stanford University, Princeton University, Duke University, and Texas A&M University.

Despite the pandemic-driven shift to fully virtual, the meeting drew 630 peak attendees from 106 institutions across Asia, the Americas, Europe, Africa and Oceania — 31 of those institutions (about 30%) based overseas. The programme included 76 oral presentations across four sessions, spanning a cross-disciplinary scope from hydrology and global change to ecology, geomorphology, AI and new technology, engineering, and socio-economics.

Post-meeting commentary

They considered it a gathering that provided scholars worldwide with opportunities for exchange and collaboration, advanced understanding and consensus on water-science frontiers, stimulated young researchers' enthusiasm, and played a clear driving role in elevating China's water-science research capacity and development potential.
